Abstract


Certain soils will experience a change in volume if the proportion of air changes which is called soil shrinkage. When there is a difference in water will cause the soil to shrink, and vice versa if the proportion of air increases then the soil will expand. Percentage of groundwater to expand in development projects carried out during the summer. Buildings that cover the ground prevent the occurrence of air which causes the volume of soil under the building to increase. Development and different soils (usually confined soil at the top of the soil surface) can cause damage (cracks) to surface structures, namely building structures, canal wall reinforcement and road pavements.

To determine the value of the swelling and shrinkage of the soil, the expansion index test (EIT) was carried out. The amount of development is expressed in the Expansion Index (EI)
