Abstract

words, gestures, or physical actions, carried out without the victim’s consent and against their will. Such behavior causes feelings of discomfort, humiliation, intimidation, and even threats to the victim. It can take various forms, including verbal acts such as inappropriate comments or sexual jokes, non-verbal acts such as lewd looks or gestures, and physical acts such as unwanted touching. In essence, sexual harassment is an action that violates personal boundaries and individual dignity, thereby negatively impacting the victim’s psychological and social well-being. This study aims to describe early adolescents’ understanding of sexual harassment, the forms they experience, and the elements contained within it, focusing on eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 24 Banjarmasin. The research employed a qualitative approach, with data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that students’ understanding of sexual harassment varies. Some students are able to recognize physical and verbal harassment, but many have limited awareness of non-verbal and written forms. The identified forms of sexual harassment include physical, verbal, non-verbal, and written, with verbal and non-verbal harassment being the most dominant. The elements of sexual harassment that emerged include unwanted actions, excessive sexual attention, and behaviors that demean the victim’s dignity. The impacts felt by students include discomfort, uneasiness, and fear. This study highlights the importance of comprehensive education on sexual harassment both at school and within the family, so that students gain proper understanding, are able to protect themselves, and have the courage to report incidents they experience.
