Abstract

Unused, damaged, and expired drugs at home can pollute the environment and pose a risk to public health if not properly managed. Health workers are expected to provide education to community in managing medicines at home. This study aimed to determine the level of knowledge, actions, and perceptions of health workers about drug management at home and to analyze the relationship between actions, perceptions, and the level of knowledge. This research is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional approach with a sample of 142 respondents from five health centers in Koto Tangah sub-District, in Padang.  Data were analyzed univariate and bivariate using SPSS. The results showed that more than half of respondents had unused drugs (69%), 23.2% had damage drugs and 33.8% had expired drugs at home.  The majority of the respondents had a good level of knowledge (73.2%) but the actions of most healthcare workers in managing medicines at home were still inappropriate (76.06%).  The perceptions of drug management at home from most health workers are good (78.2%) but there is still a lack of perception of 21.8%.  There was no significant relationship between action, perception, and health worker knowledge (p>0.05). It is expected that the government will conduct training, education, and dissemination to optimize the role of health workers in managing medicines at home.
