PENERAPAN PRINSIP ETIKA PENGOLAHAN LIMBAH LABORATORIUM BIOLOGI DI BALAI LABORATORIUM KESEHATAN MASYARAKAT KOTA MEDAN
Abstract
Laboratory waste refers to residual waste generated from various tests conducted in the laboratory. The management of laboratory waste at the Medan Public Health Laboratory plays a crucial role in maintaining environmental health and preventing negative impacts on society. This study aims to examine the types, sources, and ethical implementation in managing waste generated by the chemical and biological laboratories at the Medan Public Health Laboratory. The research was conducted at the Medan Public Health Laboratory from February to March 2025 using a descriptive study with a qualitative approach through observation, interviews, and analysis of various policy documents. The results showed that the chemical and biological laboratories produce both solid and liquid waste, categorized as domestic waste and hazardous and toxic waste (B3), originating from various laboratory tests. Additionally, the management of chemical and biological laboratory waste at the Medan Public Health Laboratory complies with applicable regulations, such as Law No. 32 of 2009 on Environmental Protection and Management and the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. P.56/MENLHK-SETJEN/2015 concerning Technical Procedures and Requirements for the Management of Hazardous and Toxic Waste. The application of ethical principles in waste management faces challenges due to limited and inadequate waste treatment facilities. Therefore, innovation in the waste management system is necessary to ensure that waste is processed safely and in accordance with environmental ethical standards.
