The Implementation of PAIKEM Model by Teachers in Teaching English in The Classroom at SMPN 5 Bengkulu City

Abstract

Teaching is not only the process of transferring knowledge from teacher to the students. A certified teacher must be creative to implement learning process which can make students do more something than just listen. PAIKEM is the learning model which concentrate students to involve actively in the thinking process and construct the knowledge independently in the fun learning atmosphere, so that appearing their potential and get meaningful learning. The objectives of this research were to know and describe how was the implementation of PAIKEM Model by English teachers in teaching English in the classroom at SMPN 5 Bengkulu city. Respondents of the research were the certified English teachers of seventh and eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Bengkulu city. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The researcher collected the data through classroom observation and documentation. While, data were analyzed by technique: reducting the data, describing the data, and making conclusion. The result of the research showed that PAIKEM Model wasn’t implemented maximally yet by certified English teachers at SMPN 5 Bengkulu city. They don’t always implement PAIKEM Model in every teaching and learning English in the classroom and they rarely used the cooperative learning but they had constructed students’ activeness by implementing: Question and Answer, Explicit Instruction, Guided Note Taking, Talking Stick, and Make A Match of PAIKEM Models. The suggestions of the research are the certified English teachers are hoped to be able to more familiar with PAIKEM model  in order to increase and develop their creativity and performance seriously in designing English teaching and learning process. The students should accustome to read and think habit actively in order to increase the knowledge, affective aspect and grow creativity in learning English.
