ORAL MICROBIAL BURDEN IN ARTISANAL GOLD MINERS WITH DENTAL CARIES: A COMPARATIVE CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY
Abstract
Background: This study aims to determine differences in the number of bacterial colonies from dental swabs from small-scale gold miners compared to non-gold miners with dental caries. Purpose: This study aims to determine differences in the number of bacterial colonies from dental swabs from small-scale gold miners compared to non-gold miners with dental caries. Methods: The type of research used is comparative observational research with a cross-sectional approach. Research samples were taken from 30 samples of dental caries swabs from gold miners and non-gold miners. Before growing on blood agar media, a 10-10 level dilution of the sample is carried out. Then the number of bacterial colonies that grew was counted using the total plate count method. Then, identification was carried out using Gram staining and the catalase test. Results: The number of bacterial colonies of small-scale gold miners is 901 CFU/ml, while the number of bacterial colonies of non-gold miners is 521 CFU/ml. The results of the independent t-test (p>0.05) show no significant difference between the number of bacterial colonies in gold miners and non-gold miners. Conclusion: Statistical calculations comparing the number of bacterial colonies taken between groups of small-scale gold miners and non-gold miners showed no significant difference.
