Etnoekologi Masyarakat Desa Pahawang dalam Menjaga Kelestarian Terumbu Karang melalui Pengetahuan Lokal
Abstract
Coral reefs face the risk of damage due to human interventions, both directly and indirectly. Local wisdom has been identified as a crucial factor in addressing the degradation of coral reefs. Pahawang Island has become a tourist destination heavily reliant on the coral reef ecosystem as its main attraction. However, no research has been done into the society knowledge in the Village of Pahawang regarding the types, biological nature, and ecological benefits of coral reefs. This study aims to explore the ethnoecology of coral reefs, particularly from ecological and social perspectives in the Village of Pahawang. The study was conducted in six hamlets, utilizing structured questionnaire interviews to collect ethnoecological data. Coral cover was also analyzed to validate respondent answers. Research findings suggest a good understanding among the Village of Pahawang community regarding the vital role of coral reefs in maintaining ecosystem stability. This understanding holds the potential as a foundation for ethno-conservation for coral reefs. However, results also indicate that the community does not fully know the field-based percentage of coral cover.
