The Banjar People within the Context of Cultural and Environmental Literacy in River Communities in Banjarmasin City
Abstract
Cultural and environmental literacy are important competencies for addressing the challenges of the 21st century. However, most literacy studies remain focused on formal education and have not extensively explored how literacy develops within communities rooted in local culture and environmental contexts. This study aims to analyze forms of cultural and environmental literacy developed among the Banjar riverine community in Banjarmasin City. A qualitative approach was employed through in-depth interviews with river community members, including kelotok boat operators, vendors, jukung boat builders, swamp farmers, and riverside residents. Data were complemented by documentation of community activities and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that cultural literacy develops through community understanding of the river as a cultural identity, preservation of river traditions, recognition of jukung as a cultural symbol, and intergenerational transmission of mutual cooperation. Environmental literacy is reflected in the ability to understand river and wetland characteristics, adapt to environmental conditions, and recognize the importance of maintaining river sustainability. The study proposes the concept of Banjar Ecocultural Literacy, describing the integration of cultural and environmental literacy through continuous interaction between the community and river ecosystem. These findings demonstrate that river communities can provide meaningful contextual learning resources for education grounded in local wisdom.
