Abstract

The integration of scientific character into learning, both explicitly and implicitly, is essential for fostering students’ scientific attitudes and values. However, the assessment process is still often conducted directly and tends to be subjective. This study aimed to develop and validate an instrument for assessing the achievement of students’ scientific character in the Cryptogamic Botany practicum. The instrument was trialed with 73 undergraduate students enrolled in the Cryptogamic Botany course. Data analysis involved Pearson’s validity test and reliability analysis using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. The developed scientific character assessment instrument demonstrated strong validity, with 21 of 22 items meeting the criteria, and excellent reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.962), confirming its feasibility for consistently measuring accuracy, curiosity, creativity, and honesty/objectivity in practicum contexts. The instrument offers a standardized and trustworthy tool for educators to evaluate scientific character development in practical learning settings.
